ASUENE Inc.announced that Kao Corporation has adopted carbon accounting cloud service for GHG measurement, reduction, and reporting“ASUENE” . Through this, ASUENE will support Kao’s global GHG emissions management and sustainability disclosure initiatives.
As sustainability disclosure requirements continue to evolve globally, companies are increasingly required to comply with multiple reporting frameworks. These include Japan’s Sustainability Standards Board of Japan (SSBJ), which is scheduled to become mandatory under the Financial Services Agency beginning in 2027, as well as international frameworks such as CDP and the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
Against this backdrop, Kao has been advancing its decarbonization initiatives under its global ESG strategy, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and carbon negativity by 2050.
At the same time, Kao recognized growing limitations in its internally developed 20 years old carbon accounting system. In particular, the legacy system faced challenges in meeting future requirements for internal controls, third-party assurance, and scalable global operations.
To address these challenges and further strengthen its sustainability management framework, Kao decided to adopt ASUENE as a next-generation platform.
Key Factors Behind the Selection of ASUENE
ASUENE was evaluated highly for its strong usability, enabling efficient operations with minimal workload for both data input personnel and administrators, as well as for its flexible and advanced analytical capabilities—key requirements for globally operating enterprises.
In addition, ASUENE provides high calculation accuracy and system reliability across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. The platform is designed to support migration from long-standing legacy systems while offering robust mechanisms to meet internal control requirements and anticipated third-party assurance needs, including those associated with SSBJ standards.
ASUENE’s readiness to support international disclosure frameworks such as CDP and CSRD, its scalability for integrated ESG data management, and its proven track record with leading manufacturing companies in Japan and globally were also comprehensively evaluated as part of Kao’s decision-making process.
Looking Ahead
ASUENE will support Kao’s initial use of ASUENE as a foundation for SSBJ compliance, and work closely with the company to ensure effective global adoption. The platform will also support supplier data assessment, advanced CFP calculations, integrated ESG data management, and compliance with international disclosure frameworks including CDP and CSRD, strengthening decarbonization management and data governance.
